Abstract

Vat dyes or intermediate products are made by reacting pyrene with at least 2\ba1/2\be mols. of an o-dicarboxylic acid anhydride, such as phthalic anhydride, in presence of a condensing agent and in a single stage. The products may be halogenated. Condensing agents specified are aluminium halides such as aluminium chloride or ferric chloride, and substances may be added which lower the melting point such as an alkali halide (sodium or potassium chloride or both). A preferred temperature is 120--150 DEG C. The products may be purified by recrystallization from solvents such as trichlorbenzene, by conversion to their salts with strong acids, or by treatment with oxidizing agents such as alkali hypochlorite. They may be converted to leuco-derivatives such as leuco - sulphuric acid esters, by known methods, and dye vegetable fibres yellow shades. In examples, pyrene is condensed with phthalic anhydride to give a diphthaloylpyrene, which is chlorinated with sulphuryl chloride or brominated.
