Abstract

466,754. Hydraulic transmission of power. CARTER, M. Dec. 3, 1935, No. 33445. [Class 69 (ii)] In a hydraulic change-speed and reversing-gear of the type consisting of a radial cylinder or slidable vane pump and motor, the pump body being carried by the driving shaft and the motor body being non-rotatable, two eccentric rings or members acting on the pistons or vanes, and means for varying the capacity of the pump or the capacities of both pump and motor, the eccentric members which encircle the pump and motor bodies are pivotally or slidably carried by a rotatable casing on bearings mounted in a fixed case or frame, the rotatable casing being connected to the driven shaft, and a single central distributing valve integral with or connected to the driven shaft may be provided. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the pump body 9 is carried by the driving shaft 1 and the motor body 15 by a stationary sleeve 14. The pump and motor pistons have slippers 22, 30 engaging through ball bearings eccentric rings 26, 34, retaining plates 24 engaging flanges on the slippers. The rings 26, 34 are pivotally mounted and connected by a pin 39 in a casing 35 mounted by bearings 48, 58, the bearing 48 serving also as a thrust bearing for the axially movable control sleeve 43. The rings 26, 34 are further connected by a pin 40 engaged by an arm 42 on the sleeve 43 ; when the latter is moved axially, inclined surfaces on the arm co-operate with fixed inclines 46, and the pin is moved to adjust the eccentricities of the rings 26, 34. A direct drive is obtained when the ring 34 is concentric, and the ring 26 has its maximum eccentricity, while no drive is transmitted when the ring 26 is concentric and the ring 34 has maximum eccentricity. Reverse drive and an overspeed are obtained by moving the control beyond the settings for no drive and direct drive. The distributing valve 3 on the driven shaft 8 has ports 4, 5 for the pump and ports 6, 7 for the motor, the ports 4, 5 being separated by an S-wall, and the ports 6, 7 by a reversely disposed S - wall, while connecting passages 17, 18 are provided. One passage may communicate through a passage 63 and pipe 66 with liquid in an outer fixed casing 51, or both passages may communicate through non-return valves 73, Fig. 13, with an auxiliary pump or other source of replenishment. A relief valve or valves 74 may be provided. The casing 35 is connected to the driven shaft, by an arm 62 engaging flats on the pin 39 and keyed to an enlargement 3A of the valve. In a modification, the ring 26 is fixed to the casing 35 in the position of maximum eccentricity. In a further form, the retaining plates 24 are engaged by plates 24A, Fig. 6, secured to the pump and motor bodies, a fan 94 directs air for cooling between fins 102, and the control sleeve 43 is moved axially by screwed members 89, 85, the pin 40 having a collar 81 provided with an inclined slot engaged by an inclined projection 83 fixed to the casing 35. The arm 62 engages the pin 39 somewhat loosely. A form utilizing a vane pump and vane motor is shown in Fig. 10. If desired, a piston pump may be used with a vane motor, or a vane pump with a piston motor.
