[Classes 31 (i) and 31 (ii)] Tapered links having bevelled longitudinal edges are made by cutting a strip of material transversely at an angle to its surface and cutting the pieces so formed at a reverse angle to the surface and at an angle to their ends, and then punching and finally shaping the blank links so formed. A strip of material is fed over a feed plate 36, secured to an inclined table 25, and is cut into pieces with bevelled edges by a driven rotary disc cutter 15, which is moved across the strip by depression of a treadle to operate a chain 20 against a spring. The table is pivoted at 29 and is adjustable by quadrants 28 being clamped by screws 32 and nuts 31 ; rods 34, 35 are provided to give predetermined adjustments. The feed plate 36, Fig. 7, is provided with an adjustable edge guide 40 and an adjustable end stop 44, being held down by members 43. The cutter carriage 13 slides on rods 8, and is adjustable vertically by screws 11. For cutting the pieces into two, a holder 50, Fig. 8, is secured to the table 25 ; the piece is enclosed by members 54 and after severance the blank links are removed automatically by an arm on the cutter carriage. Two holders which are moved to cutting position alternately may be provided. The punching apparatus comprises a die 66, Fig. 13, to punch and shape the blank link to the form shown in Fig. 11. The die is carried by a lever 67 operated by a treadle 78 through a link 77a, lever 76 and roll 77 ; stops 79, 81 are provided. The holder 68 for the link is provided with an ejector 84 and may be duplicated. In a modification, two dies are provided and operated by a power driven arm as in a clicking press.
