Abstract

465,319. Match - making machines; making match books. CLAYTON, C. E. EVERY-. (Aktiebolaget Siefvert & Fornander) May 22, 1936, No. 14568. [Class 50] [Also in Groups XVI and XVII] Matches are paraffined and headed whilst loosely mounted in guide-ways in a packeting strip. The strip may have three upstanding portions 2, 3, 4, on each side of its middle line, each with corresponding perforations through which match stems 9 are threaded in groups of ten or other number so that by cutting the strip along the lines I-I and II-II, sections are obtained which are preferably pasted to a cover strip. Striking material may be provided on portion 7 or other part of the strip to cause ignition of the match as it is withdrawn. In manufacture the strip is unrolled from a bobbin over a series of pulleys causing it to follow a number of horizontal paths for successive perforating, folding, splint inserting, heating, paraffining, and heading operations. The perforator comprises a per. forated plate on each side of the strip and a reciprocating plate carrying six rows of punches co-operating with the plate perforations. The folding mechanism comprises upper and lower plates 27, 28, and two lower tools 29 each co-operating with upper tools 30, 31 for folding the strip and retaining it during insertion of the splints. For this purpose shoulders 32, 33 on tools 29 are arranged offset to shoulders 34,. 35, on the tools 30, 31, the. tools being successively moved in the order 31, 29, 30. At the same time a row of splints 50 lying in the grooves of a grating 40 under a magazine 39 at each side of the folding mechanism is brought by the teeth 44 of a comb 45, which project into openings in the bottoms of the grooves, into a position close to the strip whereupon inserting combs 46 are lowered with the combs 45, and teeth 47 entering the grooves push the splints through the perforations in the strip as the combs 46 are caused to move inwardly. After retraction of the combs and folding tools the strip is again advanced a distance equal to the length of the section supplied with splints. The strip is fed by means of an intermittently rotating pulley having pairs of lugs which project into the channels formed in the strip and engage the rearmost splint of each group. Further driving pulleys rotate continuously, an intervening equalizing bight being provided. After passage of the strip over a steam pipe it is carried through the paraffining and heading devices, each of which comprises upper and lower rotary cylinders 52, 53, having peripheral grooves 55, 56, and guides 57, 58, which cause the edge portions of the strip to fold downwards and present the splints to the 'grooves 56 containing material picked up from a container into which the lower cylinder dips. The upper ends are steadied by contact with grooves 55. In a modification the strip is perforated by needles after folding or the splints may be caused to pierce an unperforated strip. In another method a strip as of cardboard having splints projecting from a common base is longitudinally advanced with a corrugated strip on one side and a plain strip on the other, these outer strips which are narrower than the splint strip, being brought together so that the splints engage in the folds of the corrugations and the plain strip is caused to adhere to the ridges of the corrugations by means of adhesive previously applied thereto. The splint ends are now. paraffined and headed, successive lengths of the base strip severed and the matches drawn across the packoting strips so as to cover the heads.
