Abstract

An air-permeable felt-like material comprises small feathers or feather down in loose contact with one another and held together by discrete adhesive particles. The adhesive is applied in finely-divided solid or non-solid condition. A liquid adhesive may be atomized in a closed chamber, and allowed to settle on subsequently introduced featherdowns. The chamber may be provided with movable sieve-like top and bottom portions between which the layer of featherdowns is retained while the adhesive is being hardened. Glue solution may be used, atomized in moist, warm air and hardened by passing cold air through the featherdown layer between the seive inserts, or an adhesive dissolved in a volatile solvent, or a heat-sensitized rubber latex may be used and hardened or set by the passage of hot air. Finely-powdered, solid, fusible adhesives, e.g. a resin such as colophony may be thoroughly mixed with the featherdowns, and the featherdowns agglutinated by heating to fuse the adhesive, and subsequently cooling. Shaped objects may be made by compressing the p featherdowns mixed with powdered adhesive in moulds, which may have permeable walls, heating and cooling being effected by passing hot and cold air therethrough. The moulds may be lined with textile material or paper or sprayed internally with cellulose derivative, such layers remaining attached to the felt. Endless webs may be produced by introducing the featherdowns and adhesive powder between porous, e.g. textile or paper bands, and passing hot, then cold air through the porous bands and enclosed featherdown layer. The textile or paper material may be left secured to the featherdown layer. The material may be used for filling quilts or cushions, lining garments, for sound insulation, and air or gas filters for internal-combustion engines, cigarette tips, and gas masks. Active carbon may be incorporated when the material is to be used as a gas filter.ALSO:An air-permeable felt-like material employable in gas-mask filters comprises small feathers or feather down in loose contact with one another and held together by discrete adhesive particles such as glue, rubber latex, or resins, e.g. colophony. Shaped objects may be made by compressing the featherdowns mixed with powdered adhesive in moulds, which may have permeable walls, heating and cooling being effected by passing hot and cold air therethrough. The moulds may be lined with textile material or paper or sprayed internally with cellulose derivative, such layers remaining attached to the felt. Endless webs may be produced by introducing the featherdowns and adhesive powder between porous, e.g. textile or paper bands, and passing hot, then cold air through the porous bands and enclosed featherdown layer. The textile or paper material may be left secured to the featherdown layer. Active carbon may be incorporated with the material.
