Abstract

464,310. Slicing bread. BERKEL & PARNALL'S SLICING MACHINE MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd. (U.S. Slicing Machine Co.) April 22, 1936, No. 11530. [Class 5 (i)] [Also in Groups XVII and VI] The receiving tray of a bread &c. slicing- machine is provided with a stop which is movable by slices advancing on edge and is normally constrained to support them, and is freed towards the end of its travel to permit it to collapse out of the way of the slices. As shown, a slicing-machine A, Fig. 1, is arranged to cut a loaf C on a feed tray so that the slices E are received on a tray D. The tray is open at the sides and ends, and is formed in the bottom wall with a slot 17, below which a trackway is mounted. A slide 19 on the trackway carries a pivoted stop 15 prevented from turning to the right by a stop 24 and normally held in the vertical position by a spring 25. The slide is moved close to the slicing machine so that it engages and supports the first slice cut, and moves away as the assembly of slices progresses, as shown in Fig. 5. A bag F is placed over the tray so that the bottom touches the end of the tray, the upper side being held open by an adjustable resilient arm 50. When the slicing of the loaf is complete, the end nearest the machine is pushed to the left, the stop moving with it at the front end. The spring 25 is tripped by a shoulder 28 near the end of the tray and the stop turns down into a horizontal position and allows the slices to move over it into the bag as shown in Fig. 6. As the height of the stop is only a fraction of that of a slice, when it moves into the inoperative position, there is less distance between the bottom of the bag and the forward slice, so that, if the forward slice does tilt, it will not lie flat or sufficiently tilted to cause an obstruction. In order to allow for lateral adjustment, the tray may comprise two members 35, 36, Fig. 3. The part 35 is provided with a lateral extension 37 carrying the bearings 38 by which the tray is attached to the machine by arms 39. The part 36 underlies the part 35 and is laterally adjustable by means of pins in a rack bar engaging oblique slots. A resilient extension provides continuity with the part 37. In a modification, the slicing- machine slices the entire loaf in one operation and the tray comprises a bottom wall and one side wall only, being set at an angle to form a trough.
