Abstract

463,843. Hydraulic brakes. SCHENCK EISSENGIESSEREI UND MASCHINENFABRIK DARMSTADT GES., C. May 29, 1936, No. 15151. Convention date, June 29, 1935. [Class 103 (i)] Hydrodynamic brakes of the type comprising stationary and rotating members having juxtaposed pockets within which liquid circulates and in which the braking effect is regulated by varying the degree of filling of the brake are provided with one or more transverse partitions which divide the housing into two or more compartments and whereby the external surface of the rotating member subject to frictional action by the liquid can be varied. The stationary member or housing a, Fig. 1, having the pockets t co-operating with pockets in the rotating member b is provided with a partition d and when the compartment e is filled liquid flows through a slot d<1> to compartment f which by adjustment of an outlet valve h can be more or less filled to vary the braking effect of the liquid on the outer circumference of the member b. This effect can also be varied by sliding the partition axially. In Fig. 2, pockets tare provided at both ends of the rotating member s and the diameter of this member and also that of the pockets differs at the two ends. Inlets and outlets such as p, q, r may be provided for each compartment m, n, o formed by the partitions i, k or inlets only for compartments m, o and an outlet only for compartment n and by adjusting these the several compartments can be more or less filled to vary the braking effect. Further regulation may be effected by covering the pockets more or less by sliding members. The slots between the partitions and the rotating member may also be adjustable.
