Abstract

463,783. Alternating-currentmotors; magnetos; magnets. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. Nov. 18, 1936, No. 31612. Convention date, Nov. 19, 1935. [Class 35] A rotor for a motor or magneto consists of or embodies permanently magnetized nonconducting sintered magnetic oxide. The rotor is primarily intended for co-operation with the stator of a self - starting synchronous motor. The oxide powder, the volume resistivity and specific gravity of which are specified, is moulded under pressure, heated in an inert atmosphere to about 1500‹ C. after removal from the mould, allowed to cool and finally may be heated and partially cooled in the field of a continuous current electromagnet. The rotor may comprise ferric oxide, cobalt oxide, and magnetite in specified proportions. The rotors described are disc shaped and have two or four poles. The rotor 12 may co-operate with an unshaded stator system which may be U-shaped or a straight bar 13 as in Fig. 3 or the stator may have shading coils 16, Fig. 4. A spring coiled round the motor shaft and anchored at one end may be provided to ensure starting in one direction. An additional rotor element may be provided when an increased starting torque is required.
