Abstract

463,298. Engine-driven rail trucks. BESLER, W. J. Aug. 24, 1936, No. 23229. [Classes 79 (i) and 79 (iii)] [Also in Group <XXIV]> An engine-driven railway truck, suitable for railcars, shunting engines, locomotives, &c., consists of a main frame 11, 12 (Fig. 1) with transoms 13 to which are pivotally connected one or more axle driving engine units, Fig. 4, comprising in effect sub-frames upon which the main frame is supported by coil springs 31, 32, slider members 50, 51, being provided to preserve alignment. Between the transoms 13, a transverse plank or platform 14, Fig. 6, suspended by links 15, carries springs 16 supporting the truck bolster 17 with a central pivot seating 18. Each subframe unit, Fig. 4, comprises a main transverse member 21 with side members 22, 23 of hollow formation tied at their outer ends by a cross-bar 24. The wheel axle 26 is journalled, beyond the wheels 75, in self-aligning bearings 25 in the side members, the axle ends protruding into the hollow parts which constitute casings to accommodate cranks 64, connecting rods 70, sliding cross-heads 72 and, finally, pistons of reciprocatory engines, steam or internal combustion, the cylinders 76 being either integral with or, preferably, bolted to the side members. Coverplates 74 at the sides provide for access. The crank members secured to the axle ends comprise counterweighted plates 63, Fig. 9, shrunk on to reduced axle extensions 60 which are eccentric and disposed on the opposite side of the centre to the crank pin 64 so as to allow each of these members to be of greater diameter than if the extension 60 were concentric. The valve gear is controlled by an extension 67 of the crank pin. The sub-frame unit is pivotally connected to the transom 13 by a ball-and-socket joint, Fig. 7, the ball member 30 being carried on a spindle 33 mounted in a recess or gap in the transom. A strap 38 attached to a lug 37 on the sub-frame cross-member 21 surrounds the ball, spherical filling segments 35, 36 being interposed, retained in position by annular plates 39, 40 secured by bolts 41.
