Abstract

462,847. Clamps. MODERN MACHINE TOOLS, Ltd., and SHIPWAY, S. T. Nov. 14, 1935, No. 31502. [Class 44] [Also in Group XXII] In a device for locking a slide or other movable part of a machine tool, of the kind in which a locking member on one part is forced against the other part by inclined surfaces on the member co-operating with a pair of elements arranged one 'at each side thereof and adapted to be drawn towards each other by a spindle passing through the elements and a hole in the locking member, the hole in the locking member has outwardly coned ends which are acted upon by the coned ends of the elements, and a spring-loaded releasing device may also be provided. As applied to a lathe &c. tailstock, the body a has guides a<1> for a slidable member b carrying the centre, clamping being effected by a cylindrical or prismatic plunger d forced against the under side of the slide b. An aperture d<1> in the plunger has conical ends d<2> which are engaged by the conical ends of hollow members f, f<1> arranged on a central spindle e carrying a handle g. The spindle e passes freely through the member f and screws in the member f<1> so that rotation thereof draws the members together and forces the plunger upwards. A spring i forces a pad h against the members f, f<1> to separate them when released, and simultaneously presses the plunger downwards by engaging the end of a screw cap k in the plunger.
