Abstract

461,503. Separating coal. APPLEYARD, K. C., POLLITT, S. D., and BIRTLEY CO., Ltd. Aug. 13, 1935, No. 22834. [Class 72] In the separating of coal as described in Specification 421,401, a plurality of coal separating paths in one or more machines operate through the agency of a single electric discharge tube. The discriminating fingers 5-9 in the form of resilient contacts, one pair of fingers for each path, are connected at one side to earth and at the other side to one set of slip rings 33 mounted on a shaft 32 on which is also mounted to two five-part commutators and a second set of slip rings 33, the rings 33 being connected to the commutator 10, and the rings 34 to the commutator 11. The commutators 10, 11 are provided with co-operating brushes 22-26 and 27-31 respectively, the brushes 27-31 being con. nected to the anode 2 of the valve 1, and the brushes 22-26 to the grid 3 of the valve. The brushes 27-31 are also connected to relay switches 35-39 which when actuated energize solenoids 40-44 which operate doors 45-49 for the passage of one of the separated materials, e.g. stone. The relays also control hold-on circuits by means of switches 60- 64 mechanically connected to the switches 35-39 so that the circuits remain closed for a longer period than is provided by the action of the valve. The power for operating the solenoids is a source of alternating current 50 of high voltage and the power for the relays from a battery 51 or a motor generator of suitable voltage by 100-800 volts. The relay coils 53-57, which may have resistancecapacity circuits 52 connected in parallel are connected at one end to the positive end of the battery through door limit switches 65 69, and at the other end to the slip rings 34 and also via auxiliary switches 60-64 and a rheostat 58 to the battery 51. In place of the switches 65-69 which open and break the circuits when the doors 45-49 are fully open, switches may be mounted inside the doors so that the passage of the pieces of the separated material breaks the circuits. The cathode 4 of the valve 1 is heated by a step-down transformer winding 59 for the current source 50. Specification 461,504, [Group XXXVIII], is referred to.
