Abstract
461,471. Casting-machines. THURSTON, A. P. (White, J. J.) April 15, 1936, No. 10858. [Class 83 (i)] In continuous casting the metal or alloy is brought substantially to the solidifying temperature by withdrawing the superheat through the mould walls and the latent heat is withdrawn through the previously solidified metal. The graphite mould 17, Fig. 5, is arranged in the wall of a furnace 1 and is surrounded at one end by a block 18, which may also be of graphite, and has sufficient surface to dissipate the superheat of the particular metal at the rate of feed employed. At the other end the mould is insulated by a sleeve 19 of refractory material so that the latent heat is removed axially by a stream of water 48, Fig. 1. In a modification flow of heat from this end of the mould is controlled by surrounding it with a regulable electric heater. The solid metal is withdrawn by a roller 44, driven through reduction gearing 41 by an electric motor 40, and may be aligned by rollers 20... 23 carried by spring-pressed levers 24...27. A gas burner 20<1> may be used to prevent oxidation of the mould and this may contain a mandrel if a tube is to be cast. The metal may be stirred mechanically or electrically if there is a tendency to segregation.
