Abstract

460,568. Gravity-separation apparatus. BURGESS, A. F. (Link-Belt Co.) April 23, 1935, No. 12205. [Class 111] The sludge deposited on the bottom of a settling tank is moved radially by a conveyer, which is arranged to turn bodily about the central axis of the tank. As shown sludge is collected by a squeegee D<5> fixed to a frame D suspended from a turntable C<3> turning on roller bearings on the top of a central pier A<1> in the settling-tank A. Sludge collected by the squeegee is pushed towards a discharge trough A<5> by flights D<6> on chains D<7> passing round sprockets D<8>, D<9>, D<10>, supported in the frame D. The rotating parts are driven by a motor on the turn-table the motor being geared to a pinion C<6> which meshes with a gear C<1> fixed to the top of the pier. The conveyer chains D' are driven by chain and sprocket gearing from the same motor. The liquid under treatment is supplied to the tank through a passage A<2> in the pier. the upper end of which is pierced with apertures and surrounded by a baffle B, formed of rings or longitudinal rods spaced apart. The baffle directs the liquid downwards so that solid matter falls towards the trough A5. The bottom of the trough A<5> is made to slope downwards towards the sludge outlet pipe A<7>. Sludge just above the trough is agitated by radial blades E<1> fixed to the frame D, and the sludge in the trough is moved toward the outlet by chains E<2> suspended from the frame. Clear liquid flows away over an adjustable peripheral weir A<10>. As shown, the frame D has a counterweight D<1>, but modified apparatus is described in which a second conveyer balances the one shown. In another modification the sludge collecting devices are suspended from a bridge pivoted at one end on the central pier and supported at the other by wheels on a track on the wall of the tank. A motor carried by the bridge drives a wheel which gears with a circular rack on the tank wall and thus causes the bridge to rotate. With apparatus as shown in Fig. 14 the liquid under treatment enters the tank from a peripheral trough O<1> and clear liquid overflows into a circular trough O<3> connected by radial troughs to an outlet passage O<6> in the central pier. The sludge is moved radially outward by a conveyer L<1> and drawn up a pipe L<3> by a pump L' which delivers it through a pipe L<6> to an annular discharge trough L<7>. It is stated that a screw conveyer may be used instead of a flight conveyer. Specification 460,569 is referred to.
