[Class 51 (ii)] Charging ; charges, agitating.-In a gas producer 1 having an agitator 8, 9, 10 eccentrically mounted in a rotary cover plate 3 so that it rotates therewith about the axis of the producer, the agitator tube 8 is given, in addition, a movement of complete rotation about its own axis and means are provided by which the agitator is automatically raised when increased resistance, due to a rise in the level of the fuel bed, is encountered and is allowed to fall under its own weight when the fuel level drops. As shown, the tube 8 is guided in a bearing 14 and is rigidly secured in a member 16 which carries racks 17 meshing with pinions 18 mounted on the inner ends of shafts 32, the outer ends of these shafts carrying bevel gears 31 in mesh with a gear rim 30 on a casing 26. The latter also carries a second gear rim 29, which by engagement with a fixed rim 7 ensures rotation of the cover 3 and the mechanism carried therebv about the axis of the producer, and a third rim 25 which, by cooperation with a worm 24 driven through gearing from the motor 19, effects rotation of the casing 26 and thus the tube 8 about the axis of the latter. When the movement of the agitator is hampered by increased resistance due to overcharging, the gears 31 roll on the rim 30 and thus rotate the pinions 18 to raise the tube 8, the reverse operation taking place, under the weight of the agitator when the fuel level falls. The cover 3 and the parts 8, 9, 10 of the agitator are cooled by a circulating water system. The motor 19 also drives a charging device which is mounted on the cover 3 and comprises a pocketed-drum feeder 45 delivering into a rotary container 56 divided into four compartments by radial partitions, this container being closed at top and bottom by discs 49, 51 which carry diametrically opposed inlet and outlet shoots 48, 52. The shaft 44 of the feeder 45 and the gear rim 61 mounted on the container 56 are both driven from a shaft which is connected to the shaft 20 of the motor 19 through an adjustable friction ratchet drive device. Below the shoot 52 is arranged a water-cooled half-conical distributer 55.
