Abstract

459,984. Retaining gear wheels on shafts. PACKARD MOTOR CAR CO., Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A. Feb. 28, 1936, No. 6005. Convention date, March 20, 1935. [Class 80 (ii)] [See also Group XXXIV] A gear element 22 of a power transmission mechanism is rotatably mounted upon a shaft 40 by means of rows of balls 54, 55 which run on races 51 and 52 secured to the shaft by means of a ring 56 which is pressed onto the shaft to hold the races 51 and 52, together with a spacer ring 53, against a shoulder 47. A flange 57 of the ring 56 is then rolled into a peripheral groove 48 provided in the shaft for this purpose which holds the assembly securely in position. Instead of the groove 48 a thread may be formed on the shaft and the metal of the flange 57 forced into this thread so that a final adjustment of the loading on the bearing may be obtained by screwing the ring against the race 51. An internal annular gear member may be similarly mounted within a hollow cylindrical member or support.
