459,745. Locking steering - gear. MAIN, D. W., 15802, Turner Avenue, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A. Jan. 29, 1936, No. 2686. Convention date, Nov. 18, 1935. [Class 79 (v)] [See also Group XXXII] A vehicle for alternative road-or-rail transport comprises a pair of dirigible road wheels 16, a pair of pilot wheels 20 adapted to be raised and lowered, and means controlled in accordance with the raising or lowering to limit movement of the steering-mechanism and for locking it against operation when the wheels 20 are lowered. As shown, an axle 14 carrying the pilot wheels 20 is carried by a frame 40 braced by cross-members and articulated to the road-wheel axle 12. The axle 14 is raised and lowered by a hydraulic ram 36 universally mounted on the vehicle frame 10. The frame 40 is adjustably connected to a piston rod 96, the piston 106 of which is movable in a cylinder 102 against the action of a spring 104. The cylinder 102 is pivoted to a dog 74 pivoted to a bracket 80 clamped to the axle 72. The bracket 80 has two flanges 78 which are slotted to receive the dog and between which moves a plate 70 clamped to the track rod 66 of the steering gear. The plate 70 has a slot 72 so that when the wheels are in straight ahead position and the pilot wheels are lowered the dog is raised and engages in the slots to prevent the wheels moving about their king pins. The dog is capable of actuation by a Bowden control 130. Specifications 438,761 and 457,720 are referred to.
