Abstract

459,742. Making turbine blades. WIGGIN & CO., Ltd., H., Thames House, Millbank, London, and GRAHAM, A. B., Zenith Works, Thornliebank, Glasgow. Dec. 30, 1935, No. 35986. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Squirting.-Several turbine blades with integral roots are made simultaneously by extrusion from a single billet. A billet is extruded from a container 1, Fig. 1, by a mandrel 7, the metal flowing first into recesses 9, Fig. 4, of the desired shape of the root portions, and then flowing backwardly over the mandrel through die apertures 8 in the member 1. Four blades are thus formed simultaneously, the roots being joined by a thin sheet which is then removed. The die 1 is closed by a member 4 which is moved by a handle 5 to bring an aperture 6 beneath the die and mandrel to permit removal of the extruded shape. The blades may be formed from the alloy sold under the Registered Trade Mark " Monel ", stainless steel, stainless iron, nickel steel, austenitic nickel-chromium steel, brass, or copper. Rolling; altering physical structure.-A blade is hardened by cold work by supporting it on a platen 13 which is recessed to receive it, and sliding the platen on rollers 14 beneath a roll 11 having a surface 15 to work the blade and a surface 19 which bears on a flat surface on the platen. The relieved portion 23 may work the root of the blade. According to the Provisional Specification a single blade may be formed by extrusion from a billet. The cold-working operation may be performed by a two-part die in a press, or by a pair of notched rolls.
