[Class 143] [See also Group XIX] In a weighing or other precision measuring apparatus wherein a rotary shaft (for example the indicating shaft) is actuated by flexible ribbons coiling on the shaft in opposite directions, two of the ribbons A, C, connected at one end to the actuating member or drum 11, and to the shaft 6 respectively, are connected at their other ends to a flexible bow 10, and a third ribbon B connects the actuating member and the shaft. As shown in connection with a weighing balance, the beam 1 actuates a pendulum 4 by means of a flexible ribbon 19 and cam 5. The drum 11, rigid with the pendulum has attached thereto the oppositely-directed flexible ribbons A, B, connected respectively to the upper end of the flexible bow 10 and to the indicating shaft 6. Two further flexible ribbons C connect the indicating shaft to the lower end of the bow. The straight portions of the ribbons A, B, C lie in the same plane, and the tensions of the ribbons are balanced by the bow without producing reaction on the indicating shaft. The bow carries pivoted equalizer bars 17, 18 to the ends of which the ribbons are pivotally connected. The other ends of the ribbons are also pivoted. The indicator shaft is mounted on ball bearings, the balls being of two diameters, alternating as shown in Fig. 7, so that the smaller balls roll only in contact with the larger balls.
