Abstract

458,628. Softening water. KERRISON, O. C., Windsor House, Kingsway, London. Jan. 21, 1936, No. 1956. [Class 46] A screen formed by coiling wire is associated with a base - exchange water softener to strair either the hard or the softened water, and is so arranged that it can be inserted into or withdrawn from its operative posi. tion without interference with the water connec. tions to or from the softener and without breaking any external joint As shown in the Figure hard water from a pipe 2 is delivered through a pipe 4 to the bottom of a container 1, and passes upward through base-exchange material 5, soft water passing through a wire-coil strainer 10 to a delivery pipe 16. The strainer is attached to a ported sleeve 17 which screws into a housing 9 which is itself screwed into a socket 8 in the top of the container. The sleeve has a sliding fit with the housing below the ports. The pipe 16 and a pipe 14, which has a valve 13 and leads to the pipe 2, are connected to the housing. When regeneration of the base exchange material is necessary, the sleeve and strainer are removed and salt charged through the opening. Water is then admitted through the pipe 14, a connection being made to drain through a valve 7. The strainer may have a tapered member 24 at the lower end, which penetrates into the salt, when the sleeve and strainer are replaced.
