[Class 83 (iv)] [See also Group XVI] In a machine for engraving rings comprising a striker-rod co-operating with a punch carrying the character to be punched on the interior of a ring which is placed on an anvil, and means adapted intermittently to rotate the ring for the successive punching of the characters, the striker-rod acts on an interchangeable blade carrying the punch and located in a blade-carrier which is provided with a device for adjusting the position of the punch-blade for satisfactory punching. The striker-rod 2, Fig. 1, is depressed against a spring 4, its stroke being limited by a nut 3a provided with a vernier scale. The ring 5 rests on an anvil 6, and is rotated by grooved rollers 7 carried on spindles 7a, 11, Fig. 4, on carriages 9, 9a, sliding on a guide 10, and drawn towards each other by spring 18. The rollers 7 are rotated by gears 12, 13 from a ratchetwheel 14, which is operated by a pawl 15 on a hand lever 16 and provided with a detent 14a. During each rotation of the ring the carriages 9, 9a are raised slightly by hand to prevent rubbing on the anvil. The carriages are separated to insert or remove the ring by a cam 19, acting on the spindle 7a and a stud 22 and rotated by a knob 21. The selected punchblade 23 is placed on the carrier 24 with its punch 23a inside the ring, and is adjusted for perfect impression by a nut 26 operating a screw 25 engaging in a notch 23b in the blade. A number of the blades may be pivoted to a comb 27, Fig. 5, by a rod passing through the notches 23b. The comb is slidably mounted in a slide 29, so that the selected blade can be brought into position and swung down to engage the ring. The adjusting-screw 25 acts on the whole comb 27. Alternatively, the blades may be mounted in radial slots in a disc, rotatably mounted on the carrier 24 and adjusted by the screw 25. The required blade is selected by means of indicia on the disc showing through an aperture 31a, Fig. 8, in a fixed cover 31, and is then projected by a lever 32, pivoted to the cover at 32a and provided with a pin 34 passing through a slot 31b in the cover into a notch 23c in the selected blade.
