[Class 100 (iv)] [See also Group XXII] A device for embossing characters on metal strip comprises a circular or arcuate type member mounted on a lever which is pivoted about an axis parallel to that of the type member so that it may be swung towards the blank to emboss a selected character thereon, a guide for the strip being provided. Characters are formed on the circumference of a disc 1, the appropriate character 15 being brought over the strip 21 to be embossed by rotation of the disc by a knurled disc 12 integral with an indicating disc 13. The disc 1 is supported for rotation between arms 3, 4 secured to a base 5 which is carried on a pivot 11. A handle 16 is depressed to move the disc 1 and its support downwardly against a spring 19 in the embossing operation, the depth of the impression being limited by an adjustable stop 18. The disc 1 is accurately adjusted and retained in the required position by a resilient member 24 engaging one of a series of notches in a disc 23, the member 24 being adjustable by loosening bolts 46 to adjust the position of the line of embossing. The strip engages and rotates a knurled wheel 30 as it is moved through the machine, its position being indicated by a disc 31 or by other means. In modifications, the movement of the embossing too's may feed the strip a predetermined distance through a pawl and ratchet mechanism and feed rollers. The strip may be grooved or ribbed and co-operate with corresponding ribs or grooves on the guide plate, and two or more ribs on the guide plate may be provided to form a corresponding number of lines of embossing.
