[Class 120 (i)] In an opener for wool and other fibres comprising a screen or grid chamber 4, 6 having an inlet 1<a>, an outlet closed by a door 5 and a rotary beater 2 having pins 2d, Fig. 1, a pocket is provided in the screen chamber into which the material is repeatedly thrown against a wall 6b during rotation of the beater and thereby loosened, the waste and foreign material being discharged through the screen or grid out of the chamber and the clean fibres being discharged separately from the foreign matter. One wall of the pocket comprises a plate 6a while the other wall is formed by the impact plate 6b which is adjustable towards and from the beater and also as to length. The screens or grids 4, 6 are adjustable towards and away from the beater while the door 5 is counterweighted and carries a screen or grid section 5<a>. The material passing through the screens or grids 4, 5a is collected by a conveyer 7 having scraper bars 7<a> which sweep the material into the trough 8<a> of a screw conveyer 8 which discharges to a second conveyer. The heavier material passing through the screen 6 is also forwarded by a screw conveyer 9 to the second conveyer. An air draught to remove lighter material and dust is provided through an inlet 1<c> and duct 11<x>, the latter having ,shaped inlet plates 11, 11<b>. The door 5 may be automatically operated as described in Specification 458,302. In a modification, the beater 2 having pins 2a radially adjustable in groups in the channel members 20<a>, Fig. 7, revolves within screens 40, 60, the waste material passing therethrough being withdrawn pneumatically through conduits 30, 70. A conveyer 70b for heavier material is provided at the bottom of the air intake 70<a>. In a further modification shown in Fig. 8 a second pocket B is provided.
