Abstract

457,694. Vehicles propelled by body motion of the rider. STEVENS, A. H., 5, Quality Court, Chancery Lane, London.- (Borg - Warner Corporation ; 310, South Michigan Avenue, Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A.) Feb. 28, 1936, No. 6064. [Classes 136 (ii) and 136 (iii)] A vehicle of modified scooter form comprises a pair of spaced wheels, and means for suspending a footboard between the wheels, such means providing an eccentric connection with one (the driving) wheel, which has a circumferential travel sufficient, at a speed necessary to maintain the vehicle erect, to enable the rider uniformly to shift his weight twice during a single rotation of the eccentric connection, for the purpose of propelling the vehicle. The footboard 10 is provided on either side with supports 13 which are curved to provide uprights 15 for supporting the eccentric axle 16 of the rear wheel 12, which has a diameter greater than 15 inches, e.g. from 20 to 36 inches, and preferably within a range of from 26 to 32 inches. The uprights 15 extend over the wheel in the form of a U-shaped yoke member 17 supporting a mudguard 18, which may be provided with a seat 20. Secured to the front end of the footboard 10 is a metal support 25 provided with a tubular head 26 for a steering- stem 27 carrying the front wheel 11. The footboard may be of resilient material (e.g. hickory), or may be rigid and reinforced by channel members, and may be resiliently connected to the steering-head by a bent spring strip. In a modified form of eccentric rearwheel mounting, means are provided for permitting coasting without the vertical movements of the footboard. The inner ends of the spokes are connected to a ring which is mounted by roller bearings on an inner hub mounted eccentrically on ball bearings. The ring is clutched to the inner hub by a lever, which is pivoted to the hub and is provided at its outer end with a projection adapted to enter one of a series of slots in the ring. The clutch lever is normally held in the engaged position by a spring, and is disengaged by means of a footlever and link-work.
