Abstract
457,537. Tempering glass. PILKING- TON BROS., Ltd., 703, Tower Building, Water Street, Liverpool, and FORBES, L. J.-B., The Crossways, View Road, Rainhill, St. Helens, both in Lancashire. May 31, 1935, No. 15865. [Class 56] Relates to the method of tempering glass plates or sheets in which the plates are heated in a multistage furnace. According to the invention, the temperatures of the furnaces through which each of the glass plates passes in succession are so regulated that the last furnace raises the temperature of a plate by an amount which is substantially less than the average rise of temperature in the preceding furnaces. When only two furnaces are used, the rise of temperature in the last furnace is substantially less than the rise in the first. The rise of temperature in the last furnace is preferably less than one third of the average rise in the preceding furnaces, and may be 50‹ C. or less.
