Abstract

Meso-substituted malonic esters are prepared by reacting in presence of an acid-binding agent, one molar proportion of a quaternary salt of a heterocyclic nitrogen compound having a reactive methyl group in a - or g -position to the nitrogen with one molar proportion of a meso-alkyoxymethylene-, meso-hydroxymethylene-, meso-arylamino - methylene- or meso-aminomethylene-malonic ester. Cyclammonium salts mentioned as suitable are those derived from thiazoles, oxazoles, quinolines, selenazoles, quinazolines diazines, pyrimidines and their homologues and substitution products. In examples, ethoxymethylene-malonic diethyl ester is condensed with 1.2.3.3.-tetramethylindolenine iodide, 1-methylbenzthiazole ethiodide and methyl-p-toluenesulphonate, 1-methylbenzoxazole methyl-p-toluenesulphonate, quinaldine methyl-p-toluenesulphonate, lepidine methiodide, a -picoline methyl sulphate, 4-methylquinazoline - methyl - p - toluenesulphonate, 1 - methyl - 3.4 - benzobenzthiazole methyl-p-toluene sulphonate, p-toluquinaldine ethiodide, 2 - methyl - b - naphthoxazole ethiodide, and 1-methylbenzselenazole methyl-p-toluenesulphonate; hydroxymethylene-, or aminomethylene- or anilinomethylene-malonic diethyl ester is condensed with 1.2.3.3.-tetramethylindolenine methiodide; pyridine or sodium ethoxide is used as the acid binding agent. The products sensitize photographic silver halide emulsions for which purpose one or more of the compounds are incorporated in the emulsion before it is coated on a support or the coated support is bathed in a solution of the compound.
