Abstract
Blood meal suitable for use as a feeding stuff for animals is produced from whale blood by sucking the blood while still at body heat from the carcass during the cutting up, coagulating the blood in a continuous operation, separating the blood serum and working up the residues by drying to give a meal. In an example, the carcass is laid on its back and the head and the throat and main arteries are removed together with the appendant viscera. The blood which collects in the thorax is rapidly removed therefrom through a flexible pipe which is connected to a receiver which is under reduced pressure. From the receiver the blood passes to an apparatus in which the blood coagulum is comminuted and the partially coagulated blood reduced to a homogeneous liquid which is passed to apparatus in which it is treated with a coagulant, e.g. hot water which may be fed in laterally at the bottom to impart a vortex movement to the blood. The coagulation may be effected at 75 DEG C. The serum is separated from the product by filtering or pressing and the solid residues are dried and worked up into a meal.
