Abstract

A film of a cellulose organic ester, such as the propionate, butyrate, stearate, acetate-propionate, acetate-butyrate, or acetate stearate, is rendered substantially non-curling by superficial hydrolysis of at least one surface. The preferred application is in the manufacture of photographic film comprising one of the following: (1) a base of cellulose organic ester having a coating of gelatine emulsion on one side and superficially hydrolyzed on the other; (2) a base of an organic ester of cellulose having on one side a thin layer of nitrocellulose on which is superimposed a gelatine emulsion, and superficially saponified on the other side. The saponification may be effected by floating the film on the surface of the saponifying liquid, by applying the liquid to the sheet by means of rollers, or by brushing or spraying the liquid on to the film. Suitable saponifying liquids are (1) caustic soda and water; (2) caustic soda, water, and alcohol; (3) sodium methylate and methyl alcohol; (4) sodium ethylate and ethyl alcohol; (5) sodium ethylate, ethyl alcohol, and dioxane, (6) sodium ethylate, sodium hydroxide, ethyl alcohol, and ethylene chloride; (7) ethylamine and alcohol; (8) tetra-ethyl ammonium hydroxide and acetone.
