Abstract

456,737. Force - feed lubricating. LUCAS, Ltd., J., Great King Street, Birming- ham.-(Bijur Lubricating Corporation; 22, 43rd Avenue, Long Island City, New York, U.S.A.) May 13, 1935, No. 13955. [Class 12 (iii] In a lubricating system, lubricant is pumped intermittently into and discharged from an accumulator, the admission and discharge of the lubricant from the accumulator being controlled by one or more spring-urged valves actuated once during each revolution of a member which is driven through reduction gearing from a rotary driving member. As applied to an automobile chassis lubricating system, a valve 80 is held normally by a spring 84 so that lubricant in an air vessel K is discharged through a passage 103 and passages in the valve 80 leading to distributing lines which are fitted at the terminals with drip plug or resistance fittings. The valve is moved against the reaction of the spring 84 by a rotating arm 75 to cut off the discharge of lubricant and open the air bell K to a supply of lubricant under pressure admitted at the nipple L. The arm 75 is driven from a shaft 40 through a reduction gear 46 .. 65 and ratchet teeth 67, 68. The spindle 56 carrying the arm 75 has a handle 131 which can be operated manually to enable a discharge of lubricant to be made when desired, suitable indicia being provided on the handle 131. The driving shaft 40 may be rotated by any part of the engine, or it may be driven by a wheel rotated by air or lubricant pressure or by any available source of energy. A spring-controlled piston, sylphon, or diaphragm device, with or without an adjustable stroke, may replace the air-bell K. Instead of using a sliding valve 80, the admission and discharge passages of the accumulator K may be controlled by separate spring- controlled valves actuated by a single or by independent cam devices. The supply of lubricant may be from the engine lubricating pump at the normal or at a higher pressure, or a separate oil pump, which may draw from an oil supply independent of the engine oil, may be provided. In a modification in which the device is driven from the speedometer shaft, the oil supply leads from the engine oil pressure gauge piping, and actuation of the accumulator is indicated by momentary fluctuation of the gauge needle. In another modification, a driven cam 323, Fig. 24, actuates a spring-urged ball valve 314 between an oil supply pipe 312 and a measuring chamber 327 containing a loose piston 328 pressed by a spring 336. When the valve 314 is open, oil from the pipe 312 flows into the chamber 327 and forces the piston 328 to the right to eject oil in the right hand end of the chamber 327 through a non-return valve 331 to the distributing pipes. When the valve 314 closes, the piston 328 moves to the left and the right hand end of the chamber 327 is recharged.
