Abstract
456,076. Towing banners from aircraft. AIR PUBLICITY, Ltd., Shell-Mex House, Strand, London, and MACLEOD, L. S., 24, Bramley Hill, Croydon. June 21, 1935, No. 17858. [Class 4] [See also Groups XVIII and XXX] An aerial poster, towed by aircraft and comprising letters in skeleton or silhouette form mounted on sectional longitudinal stringers bridging front and rear struts, is characterized by there being at least one section for each letter, the stringers being permanently secured to the letters and adjacent sections being detachably connected to permit ready interchange of the letters. As shown in Fig. 1, the poster comprises fabric letters sewn on tapes 16 extending between struts 3, 24, the tapes of each letter having spring clips 17 for detachable engagement with eyes 18 on the tapes of the preceding letter. The poster is maintained vertical when in flight by a billet of lead in the lower portion of the strut 3, and is held rigid by struts secured in hems on the letters. The tow rope is secured to the aircraft by an eye 25, Fig. 5, engaged by a bolt 26 mounted on a bracket 27 on the tail skid support 28 of the aircraft, the bolt being lifted through a cable 29 when it is desired to release the rope. A shock cushioning device 9 is provided in the tow rope comprising a spring 30, Fig. 6, connecting two sections of the rope and housed in a sheath 31 provided with end caps 32.
