Abstract

455,354. Cans &c. SANDERSON, T. C. H., Eastville, Beckford, near Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire. April 16,1935, Nos. 11754/35, 25817/35, and 1354/36. [Class 66] A can or like metal container is provided below the end seam 3 with a score or weakening 2, Fig. 2, extending wholly or partially around the perimeter of the can, and intended to enable opening to be effected by forming, by means of a tool, an incision at a given point of the score and thereafter using the tool to apply leverage upwardly to break open the end by applying tension across the score. To avoid buckling-in the can at the point where the incision is made a second short score 2b, Fig. 4, may be provided above the main one at the place of opening. The can may be provided with an internal collar 12, Fig. 6, which may be movably engaged in a bead 10 on the body so that it can be raised above the severed edge of the can after opening. A re-closure cover may be provided which may seat on the rim 3 before opening and engage a bead such as 10 thereafter, or a cover having parts of stepped diameters adapted to engage in the recessed end and either externally or internally of the opened can may be provided. Several forms of tools for effecting the opening are described. Those shown in Figs. 2 and 4 have shoulders 9 adapted to engage the inner side of the end seam 3, the tools being depressed so that the projections 6 break the score, the hooks 5 being then engaged as shown in the opening made and upward pressure exerted to lever up the top, the surface 7 bearing against the end. Fig. 10 shows a tool which is used as shown to effect breaking and is thereafter reversed to raise the top, the part 21 bearing against the end. Fig. 14 shows a tool operating in the manner of Figs. 2 and 4 but having the projection and shoulder constituted by stamped-out projections 25, 27. Fig. 16 shows an appliance in which an abutment 30 which may be adjustable, takes the place of the shoulder of Figs. 2, 4, the projection being afforded by a part 31 operated by a spring-controlled trigger 33 to effect breaking of the score and thereafter maintained in engagement by pressure on the trigger while the device is raised by the handle 29 to break open the end.
