[Class 117] An apparatus for segregating letters from an assemblage of letters and parcels comprises a trough-like formation of parallel or approximately parallel rollers 1, between which are gaps sufficient for the passage of a letter but insufficient for the passage of a parcel, the rollers being rotated either all in the same direction or outwardly from an intermediate point towards the two sides of the trough. The letters and parcels are delivered to the trough by a conveyer or shoot 4. Rollers 2 are set inwardly at the upper parts of the trough to prevent postal matter from being discharged over the sides. Letters pass through the gaps 3 and parcels may be removed either periodically, if the trough ends are closed, or continuously, by providing a shoot 8 at one end in which case parcels are fed to the shoot either by helical ribs 9 on the rollers, or by inclining smooth or helical ribbed rollers downwards towards the shoot. The letters are received by a conveyer 5. The rollers may be tapered or stepped, or their axes may be disposed slightly inclined towards each other, so that the gaps increase in width along the length of the rollers.
