[Class 100 (ii)] A register device for use in preparing matrices to be used in casting stereotype printing-plates, more particularly for multi-colour printing, comprises a base forming a support for the matrix and having a frame hinged thereto which carries adjustable members, adapted to be fixed relatively to the frame to provide register points, and a plurality of members for marking the adjacent margins of a matrix, all the marking members being operated simultaneously by means of a single operating member. The frame 13 is hinged at one edge 16 to a base on which a matrix 31 is adapted to be supported. The frame carries centring means, comprising a pair of wires 29, 30, the former of which is attached at each end to a plate 32 adjustable in the frame ends and locked in position by set-screws 37, while the latter is carried by plates 38 attached to plates 40 by screws 411 which permit transverse adjustment g of the plates 38, longitudinal adjustment bein effected by movement of the plates 40, adjustably clamped to the frame by the screws 41. The frame also supports registering members comprising needles 52 supported in arms 47 hinged to arms 46 which are hinged to the frame, and slots 48, 49 in the arms, through which the clamping screw 51 passes, enable the length of the arms to be varied. At the sides 14 and 16 of the frame and moving in guides 23 thereon are punches 10<1>, 10 attached to racks, operated simultaneously by gears 20 mounted on a common shaft 18 journalled in brackets on the frame side 16. A hand-operated catch 54 is provided to lock the frame 13 to the base. In use, the key matrices are first centrelined and a matrix is then mounted on the base of the device so that the centre wires 29, 30 coincide with the centre lines on the matrix. The registration needles 52 are set to the desired points on the matrix and a lever 21 controlling the movement of the shaft 18 is operated to depress the punches 10, 10<1> which form cuts in the matrix as a guide where it is to be trimmed. The other matrices to be used in preparing the multicolour printing plates are set in turn in the device and similarly marked, after which all the matrices are trimmed and can be used for casting plates, which may be placed on the printing cylinder against fixed stops with a view to printing several colours in correct register. The device can be used whenever registration of different matrices is necessary.
