Abstract

Lubricating-compositions especially for use under high pressures consist of a major amount of a lubricating - oil base and a halogenated organic compound together with a separate oxygen- or sulphurcontaining compound. Suitable halogenated organic compounds are described in Specifications 451,411, 451,412, 452,914, 453,114, and 453,115. Oxygen-containing organic compounds used consist of, ethers, alcohols, phenols; compounds, containing the CO radicle such as aldehydes ketones, amides, acids, esters, salts of acids and thio esters; hetero-cyclic compounds containing oxygen such as furan; organic compounds containing inorganic radicles such as arsenate, cyanate, chlorate, nitrate, oxime, phosphate, sulphate, sulphone, and thio-phosphate. Examples, oleic or stearic acid, dibutyl phthalate, butyl naphthenate, aniline oleate, quinoline stearate, or fatty oils. Compounds containing oxygen and halogen may be used. Examples, chlorinated phenols, chlorbenzyl alcohol, chlorsalicylic acid, chlorphenyl ether, chloraniline stearate, dibutyl tetrachlorphthalate, tri-o-chlorphenyl phosphate. Organic sulphur compounds used contain sulphur in a firmly bound condition for example, sulphides, mercaptans, thio-amides, aldehydes, ketones or acids and their esters; sulphones; esters of inorganic acids such as sulphuric or sulphurous acid. Examples, diphenyl sulphide, and phenyl mercaptan. Compounds containing sulphur and halogen may be used. Examples: chlorphenyl or chlorcresyl sulphide. Compounds containing oxygen, sulphur and halogen may be used. Examples, chlor-dibenzoyl dimethyl sulphide, chlorphenyl-mercapto-stearate. Up to 20 per cent by weight of addition compounds are mixed with hydrocarbon lubricating oils, alone or dissolved in a solvent such as benzene, amyl alcohol, acetone, naphtha, aniline or chlorinated hydrocarbons.
