Abstract

453,786. Pigments; water paints. COUTTS & CO., 440, Strand, London, and JOHNSON, F., 218, Victoria Drive, Eastbourne, [Representatives of JOHNSON, J. Y.].-(I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges. ; Frankfort-on-Main, Germany) March 27, 1935, No. 9554. Addition to 404,041. [Class 95] [See also Group IV] Dry pigment colour preparations are obtained by intimately mixing pigments with reversible colloidal aluminium silicates such as reversible Wilkinite or Bentonite in the presence of water, while adding wetting agents and drying and grinding the product. Suitable wetting agents are sulphuric esters of aliphatic alcohols of high molecular weight or fatty acid esters or amides of high molecular weight containing sulphonic groups, or the salts of the said compounds. Wetting agents specified are the sulphuric esters of octyl, dodecyl, cetyl, octodecyl and oleyl alcohols, montanol and octodecane diol, and sulphuric esters of mixtures of alcohols obtainable by catalytic hydrogenation of vegetable or animal oils or fats or fatty acid mixtures, as for example, olive oil, soya bean oil, palm kernel oil, coconut oil, train oil or tallow, or by the oxidation of paraffin hydrocarbons, and the sulphuric esters of alcohols containing halogen such as dichlor stearic alcohol ; also, condensation products of lauric, myristic, stearic, oleic, linoleic, ricinoleic and montanic acids or their chlorides, anhydrides or esters and hydroxy-alkyl sulphonic acids such as hydroxyethane sulphonic acid, or amino-alkyl sulphonic acids such as taurine, N-methylaminoethane sulphonic acid, or N-methylaminopropane sulphonic acid ; also sulphuric esters of palmitic acid ethanol amide, or stearic acid butanol amide, oleic acid N-methyl propanol amide, and the corresponding halogen-containing esters such as those of dichlorstearic acid ethanol amide, tetrachlorpalmitic acid ethanol amide, or dibromoleic acid butanol amide. The above substances mav be used as such or as their salts such as the potassium, sodium, ammonium, or amine salts. Further agents specified are condensation products of organic compounds containing at least one reactive hydroxy, carboxyl, amino or mercapto group with alkylene oxides or polyglycol ethers, obtainable according to Specifications 380,431 and 380,851 such as those from oleyl alcohol or castor oil and ethylene oxide. The pigments are worked up as described in the parent Specification. The products are used in colouring paints, leather, water colours and distempers. In examples, Wilkinite or Bentonite and water are kneaded with (1) chrome yellow and dichlor-stearic acid ethanol amide sulphuric ester ; (2) iron oxide red and tetrachlorpalmitic acid ethanol amide sulphuric ester; (3) chrome orange and oleyl-N-methyl taurine; (4) chrome yellow and oleyl alcohol sulphuric ester; (5) iron oxide red, Helio Bordeaux BL, and the sodium salt of lauric alcohol sulphuric ester ; (6) Lithol Fast Scarlet R powder and oleyl-N- methyltaurine sodium salt; (7) chrome yellow and the condensation product from ethylene oxide and the mixture of alcohols obtainable from sperm oil; (8) iron oxide yellow and the condensation product from castor oil and ethylene oxide.
