Abstract
Materials containing precious metals, particularly poor ores or tailings, are treated with a solution of an oxidizing halogen compound such as a hypochlorite, the pH value of which is adjusted to a value between 6,5 and 5, air under pressure being preferably blown through the solution during the treatment. The solution obtained, containing precious metals such as gold, platinum, palladium, iridium, and osmium, non-ferrous metals such as copper, cobalt, nickel, and bismuth, and also iron and aluminium, is subjected to the action of a reducing agent such as charcoal to precipitate the precious metals, and then electrolysed to regenerate the hypochlorite &c. and to precipitate the remaining metals other than iron and aluminium which remain in solution. After adjustment of the pH value if necessary the regenerated solution is used again. Bromine or iodine compounds may be used for the extraction, which is effected with the ore in a coarsely ground condition, and in the raw or roasted state. An example relates to the treatment of tailings obtained by floatation of a mispickel ore, which contain mainly iron, arsenic and sulphur, and about 1 grm. of gold per ton.
