[Class 83 (iii)] [See also Group XXIII] A machine of the kind in which a milling or grinding tool moves orbitally around the stationary work during operation has work-supporting means moving with the tool and arranged so that part only of said supporting means is mounted for adjustment during operation to take up play caused by reduction in the size of the work. The bed 1 is fitted with rollers 2 which support a drum 3 carrying the tool with its associated supports for the stationary work 4 which may be an axle for aeroplane landing gear. The drum is driven from a motor 5 through gearing 6 and worm gearing 8. The worksupports consist of opposed members 15, 16, the latter resiliently mounted, and a roller member 17, these members being mounted in holders 10 adjusted radially simultaneously by means of eccentrics 11 interconnected by shafts 14. The tool, shown as a grinding wheel 18, is directly driven by a motor 21 and is mounted in a frame 20 pivoted at 19 to the drum. The axis of the grinding wheel is offset from a plane passing through the axes of the work and the roller 17. The grinding-wheel is radially adjusted by means of differential gearing operated from a hand wheel 23. A ring gear 24 on the drum drives through gears 25, 27, 28 an internal gear 29 connected through gears 30, 31 and 33 to a second ring gear 34 which is thus normally rotated at the same speed as the drum. When the hand wheel is rotated a lever 37 carrying the gear 30 transmits additional relative rotation to the ring 34 and this movement is transmitted through gearing 38 ... 40 to a screw 41 operating the grinding wheel frame. In a modification, Fig. 6, wire stock may be drawn past the grinding-wheel by means of a reeling device 42 and the supporting- roller 17 may be obliquely arranged to facilitate the feed of the wire.
