452,655. Calculating-apparatus. CLEMENTS, A. A., 63, St. James's Street, Westminster. Feb. 26, 1935, No. 6120. [Class 106 (i)] An appliance for use in solving equations comprises a base 5, Figs. 1 and 2, with functional scales on its sides, a chart with a fixed diagonal 22 and threads 9, 21, adapted to extend across the base. One or more of the sides of the base is provided with adjustable scale members corresponding to different variables to vary the setting of the thread in accordance with the values of the variables. In the form illustrated the appliance is intended for use in the solution of formulµ relating to pile-driving based on Hiley's formula R=Whn/s + c/2 where R=resistance to driving, W=weight of hammer, h = fall of hammer, n=the efficiency of blow, s = penetration under last blow, and c= temporary compression of pile. The thread 9 is attached to a block 8 slidable in a groove 7 in the base. A scale of values of c on the upper edge co-operates with an index mark on a slidable scale 14. The base is formed with an extension 15 having grooves 16 carrying a cursor frame 17 to which the thread 21 is attached. This extension is provided with scales 18, 19 representing the values W, and n. In a modified form of the appliances the scales 18, 19 may be marked on a slidable member. In another modification, the block 8 has pivotally attached thereto a setting bar for co-operation with scales on one or both sides of the slot 7.
