Abstract

452,193. Change - speed gearing. ARZENS, P. J., 89, Rue de Vaugirard, Paris. Jan. 31, 1936, No. 3017. Convention date, Feb. 13, 1935. [Class 80 (ii)] Comprises change-speed gearing changeable step-by-step by a governor 36 responsive to the speed of the driven shaft 31 in which the governor at each change closes the engine throttle prior to effecting the change. The change-speed gear comprises a gear cluster 18 slidably splined on a countershaft 16 which is driven through another splined gear 15 from a pinion 14 fast on a clutch shaft 12. The cluster 18 is moved right from the low-speed position shown to second when a gear 22 is in mesh, to third when a gear 24 is in mesh, and to fourth when a lever 26<1> is struck and tilted so that a dog clutch 28 is thrown left into clutch engagement at 30 with the shaft 12. The main clutch shown is a plate clutch 10 engaged by centrifugal flyweights 5 carried by tho engine shaft 1 of a vehicle. The changeeffecting governor comprises weights 36 carried by arms 35 pivoted at 37 to a boss 38 fast on the tail shaft 31. Each arm 35 is acted on by a spring 43 and is pivoted at 39 to a shoe 40 which slides radially in a guide 41 in a disc 42 which is thus moved right as the weights 36 fly out. The disc 42 is connected by a bearing 45 to a non-revoluble carriage 46 which is connected on the one hand through springs 50 to a striker rod 49 of the cluster 18 and on the other to a rack 51 which meshes with a stabilizing-pinion 54. This pinion 54 carries lugs 52 which engage recesses 53 in the rack in gear positions of the cluster 18 in which positions also the pinion 54 is locked by a spring-pressed ball 56 engaging one of a series of notches in a disc 55 rigid with the pinion 54. As the governor weights 36 move out or in, the disc 42 is prevented for a time from sliding by the stabilizer 56. When the stabilizer yields, the carriage 46 moves but not the cluster 18, as the driving pressure on the gear teeth resists, and a spring 50 is compressed. The rack 51 in moving immediately tilts a trip lever 59 one way or the other, and this through a suitable linkage 60 closes the throttle so that the engine slows down. The pressure on the gear teeth being cased, the cluster 18 shoots over to the next gear position and is stopped thus by the stabilizer which is adjustable at 58. Speed changes may be effected directly by hand at 62. The vehicle brakes may be connected to a lever 34 which throws the gear 15 over to the left to reverse the drive. The accelerator 63 when fully released may pull a rod 69 applying the vehicle brakes.
