Abstract

Gases containing sulphur vapour together with other solid or liquid impurities are purified by passage through an electrostatic precipitation apparatus at a temperature between 400 and 200 DEG C., at such a velocity that some sulphur is precipitated together with substantially the whole of the impurities, the main portion of the sulphur leaving the apparatus without deposition. Coarse impurities may be separated first by treatment in a precipitator at such a temperature that no sulphur will be condensed. The sulphur is deposited in the liquid state with the impurities silted therein. The process is particularly applied to the gaseous mixture containing sulphur obtained by the reduction of sulphur dioxide with coal, coke or other carbonaceous material.
