Abstract

Leather-like products are obtained by reducing rawhide to the p colloidal state by mechanical means and tanning the material so produced, the disintegration being carried out at a temperature low enough to prevent the formation <PICT:0451361/IV/1> of glue. The colloidally reduced material may be used to impregnate a sheet or bat of fibrous material which is then tanned, may be tanned and compressed into a block or sheet or may be extruded as a filament or sheet into a tanning solution. The raw hide may be beaten up with wood pulp or other cellulose material e.g. flax, hemp or jute, or may be mixed with inert or inorganic powders. Filaments formed by extruding the pulped material into a tanning bath may be compressed together to form blocks. The dispersed material may also be used to impregnate skins or leather which is then subjected to a tanning agent. The leather products described may be made more flexible by stuffing with oils or latex or dispersions of rubber before, after or during tanning. An apparatus suitable for the process comprises a beater having radial arms 13 coacting with toothed blocks 15 adjustable by screws and mounted in a drum 10. A block 18 having passages therein through which the beaters pass is arranged at the bottom of the drum. The dispersed material passes to a tank 25 and thence through sprinklers 28 from which it is discharged upon a sheet or web W passing over a suction box 30. The impregnated web then passes through a tanning vat 31 between squeezing rollers 33 and over a conveyer system 36 mounted in a housing provided with a suction fan 37 for drying the web. Specifications 156,142, [Class 81 (i)], and 247,089, [Class 76], are referred to.ALSO:<PICT:0451361/III/1> Leather like products are obtained by reducing raw-hide to the colloidal state by mechanical means and tanning the material so produced, the disintegration being carried out at a temperature low enough to prevent the formation of glue.
