Abstract

451,351. Agitating and distributing fuel on furnace grates; ashpits; grates ; observation devices. STEINMULLER, L., and STEINMULLER, C. H., Gummersbach, Rhineland, Germany. Jan. 1, 1935, No. 51. Convention date, Dec. 3, 1934. [Class 51 (i)] A transverse reciprocating bar 10, Figs. 1 and 2, wedge shape in cross section rests upon the upper surface of a furnace grate with its more steeply inclined surface facing towards the rear and lesser inclined surface 10<b> towards the front of the grate. The bar 10 is attached to a driving chain 8, wire rope or the like supported by a driving sprocket 9 and arranged midway between the sides of and below the grate surface. The upper run of the chain 8 adjacent the grate bars runs upon a longitudinal support and is enclosed at the sides by cheeks 11, the support and cheeks having recesses for the passage of air. The grate shown comprises reciprocating and stationary bars arranged alternately and supported on a movable frame 2. The reciprocating bars 3a interlock with the frame 2 and with adjacent bars as indicated at 3<c> and 3d. The stationary bars are held in position by rotatable bars 5 engaging with recesses between lugs 4. As the bar 10 is reciprocated, fuel fed from a hopper 25 is stirred and fed towards the rear of the grate and burnt out fuel is pushed into the ashpit from which it is removed by a reciprocating conveyer 34. Fig. 9 shows a modification wherein the stirring bar 20 is supported by the driving chain in such a manner that it may be vertically adjusted by a bar 22 mounted on levers 23 actuated by a rod 24. Two transverse bars 10, 17, Fig. 7, may be employed arranged at different levels, the bar 10 being attached to a central longitudinal chain and the bar 17 to lateral chains. One stirring bar attached to lateral chains may also be employed. Fig. 10 shows the stirring bar 10 connected to the driving chain 8 by screws, while Fig. 11 shows the bar 10 provided with a rib 10<c> engaging with a recess 8<b> of the chain link 8<a> and a lug 10<d> engaging with a hole 8<c> and pinned to the link. As shown in Fig. 14, a stripper 50 pivoted at 54 may be arranged at the rear end of the driving chain for the bar 10 to the shape of which the side checks and rear firebars conform. A number of grates each having a stirring bar may be arranged side by side and when applied to a travelling grate a number of bars each provided with a driving chain are distributed uniformly over the width of the grate. Extending through the hopper 25, Figs. 1 and 2, is an observation tube 26 formed in two parts, the part 26<a> being supported on the front wall 25<a> of the hopper having a lateral hinge while the part 26<b> is pivoted at 25<c> and may be tilted upwardly to expose the front end of the grate. The front wall of the hopper stops short of the grate, the aperture so formed being closed by a pivoted plate 27 beneath which the bar 10 may travel. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also a modification of the grate shown in Fig. 1, wherein the ends of the movable and stationary firebars are arranged in staggered relation ; a modified form of bar 10 comprising a transverse bar on which are threaded a number of plates the lower surface of the transverse bar being preferably provided with wire brushers, scrapers or the like, and also a spring-pressed flap at the front part of the grate guided in slots and capable of yielding vertically as the bar 10 moves beneath it. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
