Abstract
450,859. Optical sound - recording apparatus. RADIOAKT.-GES. D. S. LOEWE, 10, Wiesenweg, Steglitz, Germany. Jan. 24, 1935, No. 2350. Convention date, Jan. 26, 1934. [Class 40 (ii)] [See also Groups XX and XL] A device to be used in conjunction with a source of light for obtaining a bundle of parallel rays consists of a diaphragm or selector which shuts out all rays of light of which the inclination to the optical axis exceeds a certain small value. The diaphragm may, as shown in Fig. 1, consist of two series of thin parallel plates intersecting each other at right-angles, the light being passed through the passages between the sheets and the walls of the passages being blackened. The two sets of plates may be in two separate units through which the light passes in succession, the plates of one unit being disposed at right-angles to those of the other. Alternatively, the diaphragm may be made of a number of thin glass layers separated from each other by blackened surfaces and having polished end faces. In another form the diaphragm consists of a number of coaxial tubes. The device is particularly intended for use in a light-controlling arrangement employing a Kerr cell or piezo-electric crystal, for sound-recording &c. When a piezo-electric crystal cell is used, the diaphragm may be combined directly with the cell by making the cell of a number of layers separated by opaque surfaces. Fig. 6 shows an arrangement including a Kerr cell, designed to occupy a relatively small space when using a long focus condenser, the arrangement including two right-angled prisms 11, 12 made of doubly-refracting material so that they act respectively as polarizer and analyzer. The diaphragm 3 is placed between the condenser 2 and the prism 11 and the Kerr cell 5 is disposed between the prisms 11, 12. The rays leaving the prism 12 are received by a cylindrical lens which focuses them on a slit diaphragm 8 which is imaged by a lens 9 on the image surface 13 which may be a film reel for sound recording.
