Abstract
450,501. Free-wheel clutches. SHEVLIN, J. T., 15, South Street, Finsbury, London.- (Freyler & Co., Ges. ; 2, Trattnerhof, Vienna) Oct. 19, 1935, No. 28897. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, April 21, 1936.] [Class 80 (ii)] In a clutch comprising caged rollers 13, Figs. 1 and 2, arranged between a driven shaft 5 and double cam surfaces 12 formed in a driving ring 11, the roller cage 14 is formed with radial projections 15, and a sleeve 17, rotating with the ring 11, is formed with dogs 16 and is normally urged towards the cage by a spring (not shown), so as to move the dogs into the path of the projections, and so establish unidirectional drive. By withdrawing the sleeve 17, bidirectional drive is established. The dogs 16 slide in slots in a ring 9 which, together with the ring 11, is secured to a member 2 secured to the driving shaft 1. The shaft 5 is journalled through ball bearings 4 and 8 in the members 2 and 9 respectively. The sleeve 17 is secured to a sleeve 19, 20 enclosing the mechanism and actuated by a fork engaging a groove 21. Blade springs 27 are inserted in a groove in the cage 14 to produce a frictional drag between the cage and the shaft 5. In the modification shown in Fig. 5, rollers 34 are arranged between a sleeve 33 secured to a driven shaft 31 and double cam surfaces in a toothed driving ring 36, to which latter are secured rings 40, 41 which are mounted on the sleeve 33 through ball bearings 39. The roller cage 38 has radial projections 43 co-operating with dogs 44 passing through slots in the ring 41 and projecting from a ring 45 secured in a cap member 46. Levers 49 pivoted on the end of the shaft 31 engage with their outer ends between the members 45 and 46, and at their inner ends engage an annular groove in the head 51 of a pin 52 which is guided axially within the shaft end. The pin 52 is urged outwards by a spring 55, thus establishing unidirectional drive, and is adapted to be forced inwardly, upon depression of a rod 57, by a cam projection 59 on the rod.
