Abstract
450,417. Knitting. BENTLEY ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and WAINWRIGHT, C. H., New Bridge Street, Leicester. Feb. 2, 1935, No. 3457. [Class 74 (ii)] In a circular knitting-machine, the production of pattern in the knitted fabric may be stopped, e.g. while the heel pouch is to be produced by the action of a main control mechanism, while leaving the pattern drum to be driven idly until it reaches a position corresponding to that which it should occupy at the start of a pattern, in which position it remains until required to begin another pattern in the fabric. When patterning is to start, the disc 82 is turned by the control drum, the shield 84 being moved to allow the pawl 28 to drive the pattern drum 14 step by step. When the end of the patterned portion is reached the pull in the Bowden wire 88 will be relaxed and the disc 82 under the action of the spring 83 will tend to return to its pawl-shielding position. At the same time the action of the pattern drum 14 upon the needle-selecting mechanism will be suspended by an arm attached to the vertical shaft 38 which moves to effect disengagement of the selector levers. The pattern drum at this time will not, in all probability, be at a starting position and the disc 82 will not be able to turn owing to the engagement of a down-turned portion 86 with a projection 100 on the auxiliary control lever 90, the projection 100 having been lifted up into the path of the portion 86 on the first movement of the pattern drum, the end 94 riding upwardly on to the top of the collar 98. The pattern drum is thus driven idly by the pawl 28 until the end 94 falls into the notch 96 permitting the disc 82 to be returned by the spring 83 to bring the shield 84 into place between the pawl 28 and the ratchet 26 and thus stop rotation of the pattern drum. When the knitting of the heel-pouch is to begin, rotation of the drum 14 is suspended by a disc 102, moved by the control drum, moving to place its shield 104 between the pawl 28 and the pattern drum ratchet 26. At the end of the heel-pouch knitting the control drum will act to allow the compression spring 110 to move the disc 102 into a position so that its shield 104 does not interfere with the pawl action. Specifications 427,099 and 443,893 are referred to.
