Abstract
450,171. Cutting plastic material into bricks &c. FREY, E., 64, Loestrasse, Chur, Switzerland. Jan. 15, 1935, No. 1303. [Class 87 (ii)] A cutting-machine for an extruded column of plastic material comprises a carriage carrying several cutting wires which is moved to correspond to the speed of the column, the supports for the cut articles and also the cutting wires being given a forward displacement in increasing stages relative to the end of the column to allow a return movement of the wires between the cut faces. The cutting carriage 4 runs on rollers on a track 2. A framework 7a is carried by rods 6 on which slide cutting beams 8 which are reciprocated vertically by levers 41. The cutting wires 15 are carried by the beams 8 in holders, Fig. 4, which comprise a bolt 10 carrying a tensioning pin 12 and a notched holder 14. The bolts 10 also have angle stops 13 which engage fixed yokes 17 to rock the bolts. The clay to be cut is supported on plates 18-22 of which plates 20 and 22 are fixed to the carriage 4 while plates 19 and 21 are fixed to bars 23, 24 which are reciprocated in opposite senses by pins 27 on plates 28. The plate 18 is also reciprocated by a pin 30 on the plate 28 which is oscillated by link mechanism 33 from the shaft 35. The link 34 is connected to the shaft 35 by a friction collar and stop pins 44, 45 are provided to limit the motion of the link. The apparatus is driven from a shaft 39 the speed of which is controlled by the conveyer belt 54 through a friction clutch 56. On the rotation of the shaft 39, the carriage 4 is advanced at the same speed as the clay column 9 by a cam 46 and lever 48. The shaft 35 is also rocked by the link 37 and this actuates the cutting beams 8 through levers 41. When the cutting wires have passed through the clay the angle stops 13 strike the yokes 17 and the two wires 14a, 14b are rocked clockwise while the wires 14c, 14d are rocked anticlockwise. The notched holders 14 of the outer wires 14a, 14d are longer than those of the two inner wires so that the outer wires are rocked through a greater distance, the spacing between all the wires being thus increased. As soon as the beam 8 begins its upward movement the plate 28 is rocked by the lever 33 and this causes the plates 18-21 to separate. The movement of the carriage 4 is also accelerated by the cam 46 so that the severed brick A is separated from the clay column 9. The cutting wires can now pass up between the spaced bricks and on striking the upper yokes 17 the wires are returned to their original spacing. When the beam 8 commences its downward movement the plates 18-22 are closed together by the lever 33 and the carriage 4 returns to its initial position under the action of the spring 51. If five cutting wires are provided, as shown in Fig. 10, the middle wire 60 and the two centre supporting plates 64, 65 may be fixed relative to the carriage 4, the bricks G, F being slightly pushed apart by the wire 60 on its upward movement. An oil roller 67 is provided for the clay column 9. Specification 174,414, [Class 87 (ii)], is referred to.
