Abstract

450,104. Filters. TECALEMIT, Ltd., and CHALMERS, R. A., Great West Road, Brentford, Middlesex. Jan. 24, 1935, No. 2362. [Class 46] A filter, such as one for the engine oil of a motor car, is fitted with a byepass valve which opens when the pressure drop through the medium exceeds a predetermined value, and the opening of the valve closes an electric circuit to operate a visual or aural signal if the temperature of the liquid being filtered exceeds a predetermined value. Fig. 1 shows a filter element 1 in a casing 2 with inlet 3 and outlet 9. A piston-valve 13, shown in section in Fig. 2, is mounted in the cover 5 of the filter casing, so that excess pressure outside the element, due to closing of the element, causes the piston 18 to rise against the action of a spring 24 and allow unfiltered oil to pass through the bore of the valve casing and through apertures 19 in the valve casing into a bore 8 in the filter cover communicating with the outlet 9. The piston carries a bi-metal strip 35 which, when the valve opens, engages the bore of an insulated contact piece 25 and closes a circuit containing a battery 37, a light bulb 36 and an earth return 38. For contact it is necessary that the upper end of the strip 35 should be sufficiently deflected and if the oil has not attained a sufficiently high temperature the signal will not be operated when the byepass valve is opened.
