July 26, 1935, No. 21335. [Class 105] [See also Group XXXVII] A wheel-operated switch for railway signalling or for gate-shutting means at a level crossing consists of a rubber bag 5 arranged at the side of the rail 1 so as to be engaged by the wheel flange and thereby compressed to force air to a flat rubber pouch 12 which is thus expanded to close two contacts 13, 14 which remain closed for some little time as the air is only allowed to return slowly. This slow return of the air takes place through a small aperture 10 in a flap valve 9 which on the forward flow opens to give an unrestricted passage. A relief valve device 15 is filled with felt or spongy material 16 to permit escape of air on temperature increase. The complete device is clamped to the rail.
