Abstract
The forme or coating cylinder of a printing or coating machine after being coated with ink or other liquid, excess of which is removed by a doctor or scraper, is subjected to controlled evaporation which effects a preliminary <PICT:0449112/III/1> drying before the impression point is reached, which extends over the whole region of the cylinder located between the scraper and the impression point, the volatile constituents thus evaporated being removed directly after their liberation in such a way that they are prevented from escaping freely into the atmosphere of the workshop or the like where the machine is situated. The drying is effected by a controlled current of air which is passed through a casing 10 extending from the scraper 6 to a point immediately adjacent the impression point and by so removing the volatile constituents of the liquid, ink or coating fluids containing spirit, benzene, xylol or the like may be employed. The cylinder 1 of a printing-machine is almost surrounded by a closed ink reservoir 4 into the ink of which the cylinder dips, fresh ink being supplied by sprays 8 which direct the ink against the cylinder. An outlet pipe 9 is provided and the ink level is maintained constant by any suitable means. The side of the reservoir is closed by a scraper 6 attached to the drying chamber 10 and the chamber 10 may be formed with apertures 11 through which air may be drawn. The air is directed by guide surfaces 12 over the cylinder 1 and one or more hinged member 13 with inspection windows 15 may be provided. The air and solvent vapours are discharged through an aperture 14 and the solvent recovered. In an alternative form, cold or heated compressed air is passed through the drying chamber and withdrawn by suction and a container for charcoal or other absorbent substance may be situated in the suction outlet to remove the solvent vapours. The printed surface may be subsequently treated with a current of air and may also be heated.
