Abstract
Electric materials, e.g. conductors, are insulated by means of filaments or the like having a basis of an organic derivative of cellulose and which contain an ester of phosphoric acid in an amount equal to at least 20 per cent of the weight of the cellulose derivative. A number of suitable phosphoric esters are specified. Particularly useful as insulators are low-twist yarns of continuous filaments, but other yarns, artificial straw, and yarns spun from staple fibre may also be employed. The insulator may be used together with other insulating materials, e.g. coatings of rubber or enamel. In an example, 100 parts of cellulose acetate and 20 parts of tricresyl phosphate are dissolved in acetone, spun to filaments of 1,5 to 3 denier, grouped, and twisted to 1 to 5 turns per inch. In a second example, the spinning solution comprises a solution of 100 parts of cellulose acetate and 50 parts of tricresyl phosphate in acetone. The yarn obtained by either of these examples is lubricated with olive oil and braided or wrapped spirally on to copper wire of \ba1/40\be inch diameter. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 is not limited to the use of the insulating material in filament or like form.
