Abstract
448,249. Aeroplane wings. GRANT, C. H., 51, Prospect Street, New Rochelle, New York, U.S.A. Dec. 4, 1934, No. 34816. Convention date, Dec. 9, 1933. [Class 4] A trussed structure particularly for an aeroplane wing comprises a series of interconnected panels and links, the panels being pivotally connected for rotation and adjacent links being pivoted together and pivotally engaged by adjacent panels to guide the motion of the panels in unified flexure of the truss. The wing spars 1, 2 are fixed relatively to one another by channels 21, 22 which carry a wormwheel 33 mounted in a casing 26 slidable in guides 28 on the channels. The worm-wheel 33 is driven by a worm 34 connected by a flexible coupling 36 to a shaft 35 operated by a worm gear from a shaft 40. A screw-strut 31 passes through the worm-wheel 33 and is raised or lowered to alter the camber of the wing when the worm-wheel is rotated. The wing ribs are jointed and comprise a front section 3, Fig. 3, rotatably mounted on the front spar 1 and a rear section 5 slidably mounted on the roar spar 2. Triangular sections are mounted between the spars, the bases being pivoted at 9 to the upper portion of the rib and their lower ends being slidable in slots 11 in the lower portion of the rib. The apex of each section is slotted at 16 to accommodate the pivot points of diagonal braces 14 and each end triangular section is anchored to the front and rear section of the rib by links 17. The covering 29 of the undersurface of the wing is provided with overlapping portions 30 to enable the surface to expand and contract.
